Natural gas leak
Summary: Rochester Fire Department (RFD) units where dispatched for a natural gas leak at the control tower building at the airport. The line break was caused when a skid loader struck the gas inlet to the building during snow removal. The building was evacuated, and the boilers to the building were turned off prior to RFD arrival. Engine 11's (E11) crew monitored gas readings to find an exclusion zone outside of the structure. There was no LEL measured up to 10 feet from the leak. Truck 12's (T12) crew monitored inside the building and found gas levels of 1 to 2 percent LEL inside the structure. Minnesota Energy arrived and determined that gas shut off would have to be accomplished several hundred yards upstream of the leak. E11's crew set up traffic cones to form a vehicle exclusion zone around the leak E11's crew did a secondary monitor of the building and set up positive pressure ventilation (PPV) to clear the control tower of any gas fumes. E11 and Car 2 stood by until MN Energy got the gas shut off. No further action was required of RFD crews.

Building fire
Summary: Engine 31 (E31) was dispatched to a fire in a garage under a vehicle. Upon arrival E31 found fire conditions involving a vehicle in the garage of above said residents. At the arrival of fire apparatus the following assignments completed: E31: Upon arrival E31 established fire command (later turned over to Car 2), and established an offensive fire attack. E41: Established water supply and set up RIT team. Truck 42 (T42): Established ventilation, and brought tools to front of garage. Car 2 (C2): Established ICS (fire command)   E31 on establishing  an offensive fire attack made a initial knock down of fire from outside the main garage door. Then after deeming structure safe, proceeded to enter garage and continue fire attack in a closer proximity to the vehicle that was on fire. 31 opened the hood and doors of vehicle and extinguish the remainder of the fire. After ventilation  31 proceeded with overhaul during that time command called for a fire investigator. During overhaul 31 found slight charring on one table in the garage. Other than smoke damage, and the vehicle it was the only significant bit of damage inside the structure.   Upon C2 clearing of the scene with E41, and T42, E31 took over scene command. 31 stayed with the investigator to provide first hand accounts, and lights for the scene. Due to the extent of fire I informed the home owner that the vehicle would have to be towed from the structure as soon as possible (that night). E31 was available for for response, but would remain on scene until vehicle was removed. At that time 31 was called to an arcing power line. After 3 hrs. when the later emergency was terminated, 31 went back to fire scene and confirmed vehicle had been removed from garage. Scene cleared 0518.

Passenger vehicle fire
Summary: Engine 41 arrived to a vehicle fire with no exposures.  Vehicle was located in the rear of the target department store parking lot.  A hand line was pulled and the fire quickly extinguished.  The trunk compartment was forced open to enable complete extinguishment.  The driver and owner of the car stated he was on 37th street and was notified his car was on fire by another driver.  He stated he drove into the empty lot and evactuated his vehicle.  He has no idea what caused the fire, although he thought it originated near the right rear wheel well of the vehicle.  Burn patterns indicated the fire did originate from that area.  There were no obvious items in the trunk area that could have caused ignition.  I noted no other suspicious indicators.  Law enforcement arranged for a tow from pulvers, and waited with the driver. We cleared without further incident

Carbon monoxide incident
Summary: Dispatch-T12 and R1 resonded to a CO detector going off at the request of MN energy. They wanted to gain access to a locked town home   Situation Found-MN Energy on scene stated they found a bad water heater in a town home. The complex was four town homes connected together. The gas company red tagged the water heater. They had readings of 100ppm in the townhome with the bad water heater.   Action Taken-T12's crew gained entry into the locked town home. With had readings of 72 ppm through and opening window. We entered through the window, unlocked the door and did a quick search. No one was home. The town home was ventilated with an electric fan. The screen to the apartment that was locked was put back in the window, a note was left explaining what occured and the apartment was locked. All four town homes were checked for levels of CO. There was some residual readings from 0-4ppm in an adjacent town home. The windows were left open for a while. The levels cleared.  Their CO meter was reading 95 ppm and activated. They called the gas company who tracked the problem to the adjacent town home's water heater. The town home with the bad water heater did have a CO detector, but it did not activate. They were going to purchase a new meter in the morning. The two occupants of the town home with the bad water heater did have some symptoms of CO exposure. C2 was called to bring down the carboxyhemoglobin detector. The two occupants had readings of 6 and 7 on the meter. The readings of the two occupants who's CO alarm activated had no elevated readings with the carboxyhemoglobin monitor. SMH ER was called by C2 and a Dr stated if the levels were 10 or higher they should be seen. They stated they were doing fine at this time and did not want medical attention. They would go in if they began feeling ill. T12, R1 and C2 returned to service.

Building Fire
Summary: Rochester Fire Department dispatched for a structure fire in a detached garage. Home owner told dispatch that there were explosive materials in the building. The explosives turned out to be painting products.

On arrival the garage was fully involved. The home owner was using a garden hose to protect the house. Engine 11 (E11) initially pulled the junk line for exposure protection. The junk line was turned over to Truck 12 (T12). E11 then pulled a 2-1/2 in. line to put the fire out.

Rural pump operations were used to supply E11 with water. Tanker 1 found 2 dry hydrants before finding one with water in it. Fire was put out with no further problems.

Due to the large volume of flame the garage was completely destroyed. Fire was due to a car fire in the building.

E11 stayed on scene for an extended time to put out hot spots. Scene was turned over to an Olmsted County Sheriffs Office investigator.
