The following is a brief description of the content of the physical performance examination as it was given in 2005. The test was designed to give the department a valid method of identifying fitness levels of Firefighter candidates. The test is timed and must be completed sequentially. The course and time start on command of the Course Marshal and the clock does not stop until all evolutions have ended. The tasks in order are:

TASK 1. Stair climb with high-rise pack

Carry a high-rise pack (2-50 foot sections of hose approximately 45 pounds) to the fifth floor. The hose   must be placed on the red X on the floor.

TASK 2. Fan Carry

Pick up an exhaust fan weighing approximately 45 pounds and carry it a distance of 150 feet. Place the fan back in its original location.

TASK 3. Forcible Entry

Using the 8-pound shot mallet and Keiser Machine, drive a 165-pound I-beam five feet. This event is complete when the end of the beam crosses the five foot line.

TASK 4. Hose Advance

After walking 140 feet, pick up a nozzle and move a 1 3/4 inch charged hose straight forward for 75 feet, open the nozzle, then close the nozzle, and place the nozzle on the ground. Then walk 30 feet to the next event.

TASK 5. Victim Rescue

Drag a 175 pound victim (dummy) a distance of 100 feet. This event (and the course) is complete when both the victim and the candidate completely clear the finish line.
