Golf Announcements

Dear Rochester Public Course Golfer,

It has been our pleasure to serve our Members and Patrons in 2011.  We hope 2012 is as successful.   As you recall, 2011 had a poor start.  Weather delayed our opening of the courses, and kept the greens from growing normally after a long winter.  Spring was delayed and so was the golf.  April is usually one of our busiest months as golfers return just like the robins.  This year April was our poorest month for golf.  In fact, we lost 1/2 the rounds that are usually played.

May and June started getting us back on level ground with 2010 and then July and August hit with debilitating heat.  Rounds fell off again as the turf took a beating in the heat.  We really lost turf due to excessive transpiration, wilt and direct heat.

September and October saved our season.  Great weather and anxious golfers returned to the courses and began to play on our colorful fall courses.  The net result was a loss of 7500 rounds  and $15,000 from our 2010 standard.

As of this writing, the Golf Division is $41,000 in the black and $126,000 ahead of 2010 final numbers. It is to the credit of our wonderful staff, that we are ending the deficit spending in the Golf Division.  If the revenue is not there, staff is required to do the best they can with what they have.

We have a long way to come back from all the turf loss in mid summer.  The greens at Soldiers have yet to completely heal.  The fairways at Northern Hills were unacceptable and a big push was made in October to install automated fairway heads in all the fairways.  Our crews finished all but 4.  Expectations will be high for much improved fairways and approaches.  This will be my number one priority for 2012; Northern Hills fariways.

The First Tee Program is the new choice for teaching kids and adults the game of golf and the etiquette associated with the game.  Bill Watson "Watty" and Paul Pehler are excited about all the new developments with their program.  The First Tee National School Program  has been extended to the Lincoln choice, Washington, Jefferson, John Adams, St. Francis, St. Pius, St. John's, Gage, Central Intermediate, Folwell, and Bamber Valley schools.  Kids are being introduced to the game of golf that never before had the chance.
