Dear Rochester Public Course Golfer,
Golf in 2013 was without equal. We lost March and April. The first week of May saw heavy snow, and drainage issues closed holes on Eastwood and Nothern Hills clear into June. I wanted a do-over for 2013, but looking back, we showed a resolve to fix our weaknesses, learned how to work together, and even on those long days and dark hours we developed a gritty self confidence. Even though we showed tenacity, and learned some valuable lessons, I don't want another spring like that one.
One thing that surprised us was the financial bottom line for 2013. With 15,000 fewer rounds of golf played, 500 fewer Passes sold and revenue down over $110,000, our bottom line loss of $30,000 is $21,000 better than 2012. Green fee players saved the day. More unique players enjoyed the summer on our courses, leagues filled up, and tee times were full when the days turned to summer. Our expenses on the courses were down over $125,000. The course Pros and Superintendents reduced labor costs and minimized incidental purchases. I am very grateful to all the managers at the facilities, their understanding of our business created good financial decisions.
In light of all the efficiencies in our operation, we still have not been able to become profitable. In 2009, we substantially reduced Pass rates back to 2003 levels and have maintained those rates, with few modifications, for the last 5 years. Pass purchasers will note an increase for 2014. Rate increases of $10 - $30 reflect our cost of labor, fuel, fertilizer, chemicals, utilities and equipment repair. In checking other local courses and similar municipal Park and Recreation facilities, our rates are still very competitive. I hope we can continue to be efficient or find new ways to provide a quality product at reduced costs, so that Pass rates can remain nearly constant for the next 5 years.
Our fund raising golf tournament for The First Tee, The Habby Classic, was a huge success in spite of the rain in 2013, and plans are being made for the 2nd Annual on June 7th, 2014. The band Incognito will be playing that evening and everyone is welcome to come. A free will donation at the gate will allow us to maintain a healthy and growing "The First Tee " program at Hadley Creek. Thank you to all those volunteers that help us put this feature together for the good of the kids.
