Rochester Animal Shelter

Rochester Police

History

On Monday, May 13, 1996, the Rochester Animal Control Unit moved into their new facility at 2150 Campus Drive SE. This move was a culmination of over four years of discussion, study, architectural design and actual construction. This all began when the police department, which is responsible for Animal Control, informed the City Council that the old building was literally falling apart. Because of the deterioration of the shelter, the Animal Control Officers were finding it difficult, if not close to impossible, to maintain an acceptable level of sanitation in order to control the spread of any disease or illness that a dog or cat might have when brought into the shelter.

In December of 1993, the city hired TSP One, Inc. of Rochester as the architectural firm to design and oversee the construction of a new building. Because of several delays, ground was not broken until September of 1995, by the Floyd Larson Construction Company of Rochester. The total cost of the project was $735,210, which includes a $95,000 cost to Olmsted County for extension of utilities from the closest county campus building.
