Shelter Features
The building is about 7000 square feet and its walls are all of cement block construction. Some of the features of the facility include:
- Kennel space for up to 40 dogs and cage space for up to 30 cats.
- A micro-filtering system built into the air exchange system that removes odor and contaminants from the air as it is re-circulated through the kennel area.
- A power washing system for speedy and effective cleaning of kennels.
- All kennel and animal handling areas have a troweled on Quartz-epoxy flooring and epoxy painted walls to deal with daily wash-downs.
- All kennels have a narrow wash-through slot at the rear, to allow animal waste to be washed through and into a gutter system that is equipped with a flush valve.
- A veterinarian room with adjacent quarantine rooms for animals that have symptoms of illness.
- A kitchen area for dispensing food for the animals and keeping utensils and dishes sanitized.
- An attached two stall garage with a fenced area for large animals, that in the past have included cougars, a bear, goats and pigs.
- The garage will also serve as an area for future functions, such as rabies clinics and public education programs.
- The public areas of the shelter include a reception area and an adoption room, where families or individuals that think they may be interested in adopting an animal can spend some time with it, before they make that decision.
- Climate control is accomplished through the purchase of heated or chilled water from the county waste to energy plant.
- An employee locker room with shower and changing areas.
