The Patrol Division of the Rochester Police Department is comprised of uniformed personnel who deliver law enforcement services to the community 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. The Patrol Division is the core operational function of the police department and visible face of our mission: “To work with the public to improve the quality of life in the community.”
For emergency response purposes, the City of Rochester is divided into sectors: Northwest, Southwest, and East. Each sector is then divided into beats, allowing officers to patrol a designated geographic area. There are 9 separate beats within the city.
Officers in the Patrol Division work various hours providing 24/7 coverage and are assigned to one of four platoons: A, B, C, or D Platoons. Patrol shifts are 12 hours in length and officers work a four day on – four day off schedule. Hours of work include permanent nights (A Platoon), permanent days (C Platoon), and two shifts that rotate between days and nights every 24 days (B and D Platoons). Both A –C and B – D Platoons are supported by a mid-shift that generally works from 4 pm to 4 am.
