PREVIOUS STORY:
If you’re attending Rochesterfest at Soldiers Field Park on June 26, be sure to visit a special educational event hosted by Rochester Parks and Recreation and the Olmsted County Master Gardeners. From 6 to 7 p.m., a free turf alternatives presentation will take place near the park’s demonstration area, and all are welcome to attend.
Participants will discover how to transform portions of their lawns with more sustainable options that use less water, require less mowing and support pollinators.
Rochester Public Works Environmental Services will also be on site to share information about Rochester Garden Grants, which help residents and groups incorporate turf alternatives or native plantings into their yards and gardens.
The demonstration plots feature native grasses, sedges, rushes and flowering plants. These plants provide an attractive, low-maintenance option compared to traditional turfgrass. Some areas are soft and walkable while others add color and support bees and butterflies.
“The demonstration area gives us a chance to show people what is possible in their own yards or community spaces,” said Park Planner Jeff Feece. “Native plants can reduce maintenance and support a healthier environment, and we are excited to share these ideas with the community.”
