2019 Stormwater Speaker Series

The Stormwater Presents Speaker Series is a quarterly program featuring topics related to stormwater management in the City of Rochester. This program is FREE of charge and no registrations are required. All presentations are held in Rochester at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota - Cascade Meadow (2900 - 19th Street NW), unless otherwise noted. All programs are subject to change. 2019 Rochester Stormwater Presents Speaker Series Calendar

Tuesday, February 12 at 7pm:  Planning your Rain Garden

Stephanie Hatzenbihler, Environmental Education Specialist City of Rochester - Public Works

Is minimizing pollution of local waterways important to you? Are you looking for a way to draw more birds and butterflies to your yard? Do you want to spend less time mowing your lawn? Join us as Stephanie Hatzenbihler explains how retaining the rain can make all the difference! This class will cover the basics of rain garden functions, the benefits of long rooted and native plants, and the importance of managing stormwater onsite. A photo tour will highlight rain gardens throughout the city, including those installed as part of the Realize Rains Garden Rochester Cost-Share Grant Program.

 

Tuesday, May 7 at 7pm:  Stormwater Update

Troy Erickson, Water Resources Manager City of Rochester – Public Works

This is an excellent opportunity to learn about stormwater management in the City of Rochester. We’ll start with the basics of our Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) permit and discuss how the City of Rochester took action in 2018 to meet the permit requirements.  Then you’ll learn about upcoming projects for the rest of 2019 and will see how the City is adjusting to the updated MS4 permit.

 

Thursday, August 8 at 6pm: Resilient Yards Workshop

Metro Blooms & Blue Thumb Experts

Is your yard ready and resilient? Weather extremes, from hotter temperatures to more frequent heavy rainfalls are new normal in Minnesota.  This workshop provides a framework to understand the importance of resilience and how it can be fostered in your yard through a variety of practices, including planting native plants and how to install your own raingarden.  This workshop is presented by experts from Metro Blooms and Blue Thumb: https://metroblooms.org/workshops/

Thursday, November 7 at 7pm:  Smart Salting in Rochester!

Stephanie Hatzenbihler, Environmental Education Specialist City of Rochester - Public Works

Learn about the City of Rochester’s new “Smart Salting” program and how you can get involved!  This introduction session will discuss snow removal techniques and ice management for your home and compare to the methods used by Public Works at the city-wide level.  Tips and tricks that you shouldn’t miss will be shared!
