The City Hall Domes Lit Orange for National Gun Violence Awareness Day

Post Date:06/07/2019 9:57 AM

Jun 7, 2019 - Rochester, Minnesota – On June 8, 2019, the City Hall domes will be lit orange for National Gun Violence Awareness Day, which falls on the first Friday in June.

In 2013, 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton was shot and killed in Chicago. The color orange was chosen in memoriam and to raise awareness about gun violence. It has since been the defining color to represent peace and hope for a future without gun violence.

Mayor Kim Norton states, “Lowering gun violence is critical in keeping our communities safe. By raising awareness and focusing on gun safety efforts, we can work together to make gun-related violence a thing of the past.”

This day and the color orange are not only to raise awareness about gun violence, but to remember those that have been lost. Every day, hundreds of Americans are shot and killed or injured, and nearly two-thirds of gun deaths are suicides.

According to the Wear Orange organization, 100 Americans are killed every day with guns, firearms are the second leading cause of death for American children and teens and access to a gun increases the risk of death by suicide by 3x.  For information on the movement and to learn about how you can get involved, visit
