National Association of Minority Contractors Upper-Midwest Chapter Launches Rochester Branch
The National Association of Minority Contractors Upper-Midwest Chapter (NAMC-UM) will be launching its Rochester branch with an event on Thursday, June 20, 2019 from 4-6 p.m. at One Discovery Square, 202 4th St SW, Rochester. Walter L. Smith III (WS-3), resident of Rochester and executive director of Everybody In MN, is orchestrating the launch of the NAMC-UM chapter Rochester branch. The City of Rochester is proud to support this initiative.
The NAMC-UM builds bridges by crossing barriers: leveling the playing field for minority businesses. Smith, along with NAMC-UM President Keith Baker and other NAMC-UM leaders from St. Paul, will discuss the NAMC-MN Rochester branch goals at the launch.
“The nature of NAMC’s work is about case management level capacity building and knowledge development for small businesses,” Smith explains. “(We want to help create partnerships) similar to the U.S. Bank Stadium project’s Vikings Stadium Consortium where larger contractors partner with smaller, minority-owned businesses.”
Jorrie Johnson, project manager for the City of Rochester overseeing women and minority business participation and work force employment goals for Destination Medical Center (DMC) projects, welcomes the NAMC-UM Rochester branch. She states, “NAMC’s services are essential to help small, minority-owned businesses get established by connecting them with resources and navigating the complex construction bidding environment. We look forward to continuing to work with this important organization.”
Smith is energized to work with the City of Rochester and community organizations to build women and minority businesses and workforce participation. “I’m excited by the opportunities to work together by creating pathways for the changing demographic populations here in Rochester,” says Smith.
