City of Rochester Receives Voice of the People Award for Digital Engagement Efforts
Polco and National Research Center, Inc. (NRC) have announced Rochester, MN as the Winner of the Voice of the People (VOP) Award for Excellence in Online Civic Engagement. The Voice of the People Awards stand alone as the only award given in local government based on exceptional use of civic engagement technology or community opinion. These honors recognize top performing jurisdictions that best listen and act for the benefit of their communities.
The City of Rochester started using Polco in March 2019. To date, there are over 1,020 users, with a goal of 1,500 users by the end of 2019. There have been a total of over 10,500 responses to the various questions that have been posted to date.
Steve Rymer, City Administrator, shares, “We are committed to providing our residents the highest level of communication and engagement opportunities. The adoption and use of Polco is an example of our focus on innovative solutions that will provide community members the ability to engage when it is convenient for them. We will continue to focus on enhancing our engagement activities to reach all members of our community.”
Jurisdictions were nominated in 2019 for the following categories: Online Community Engagement, Community Engagement, Safety, Mobility, Foundations of Livability, Recreation and Wellness, Education and Enrichment, Natural Environment, Built Environment and Economy.

"These communities are setting a new standard in using technology to improve the relationship between residents and city officials. Their work is truly worthy of recognition."
Now running eleven years, the Voice of the People Awards are presented by the International City/County Management Association (ICMA), Polco and National Research Center, Inc. They were given out at the 105th Annual ICMA conference in Nashville, TN, which was held on October 20-23, 2019.
To be eligible for the Voice of the People Awards, a jurisdiction must either have conducted The National Community Survey™ (The NCS™) or subscribed to Polco.
