City of Rochester Shares Update Regarding Municipal Parking Ramp #6

Post Date:11/26/2019 8:10 AM

The City's newest 630 stall municipal parking facility was completed in April 2019. The vision for the ramp is to allow for a structural expansion vertically. Recently a proposal from Common Bond to build affordable housing on top of the ramp was accepted.  The City recently learned there may need to be additional design/engineering work before any vertical expansion can occur. The preliminary review shows that there are no safety concerns with Ramp 6 and it will remain open for public use.

The City of Rochester engaged Walker Consultants to do a preliminary review of the ramp. Walker Consultants’ initial findings have identified that the design and engineering are possibly not capable of supporting the lateral loads (and possibly vertical loads) needed to build housing on top of the ramp. The review is preliminary and Walker Consultants needs to do more testing.

City Administrator Steve Rymer shares, “The City of Rochester is doing our due diligence at this point and the thing we do know, is that the ramp is safe for its intended use as a parking facility today. Some additional work may be required to support the housing and we are taking the necessary steps needed to better understand our options. The City of Rochester remains committed to affordable housing and the safety of our community and visitors."

The next steps will include receiving a quote from Walker Consultants for expanded work to determine what additional design/engineering is required to allow for vertical expansion on Ramp 6.
