Open Burning vs. Recreational Fires

Burning of leaves, sticks, brush and tree branches is not allowed in Rochester. This includes the wood from your last building project, or the tree that fell down last summer.  To apply for an open burning permit you must meet the conditions outlined in the below Open Burn Policy.  Application can be made at Citizen Access permitting portal. Contact Rochester Fire Department at (507) 328-2056 with questions.

Fire Permits are required for the following activities:

• Construction Permits
  • A construction Permit allows the applicant to install or modify systems and equipment for which a permit is required by Section 105.7

•  Operational Permits
  • An operational permit allows the applicant to conduct an operation or business for which a permit is required by 105.6 for either:
    • A prescribed period
    • Until renewed or revoked

Inspections can be scheduled by calling the Fire Marshal's Office at 507-328-2056.  For Fire Construction inspections, you may request an inspection through Citizen Access Permitting Portal

Cancelations or rescheduled inspection requests can be made by calling us at 507-328-2056.

A tour can be scheduled by submitting a request using the Station Tour or Presentation form. 

The City of Rochester and the Rochester Fire Department  is currently underway in developing a program for smoke and CO alarm outreach to the community.  Until we are ready to roll out our program, the Red Cross has a program for an in home fire safety check which includes an installed smoke alarm.  Red Cross Home Fire Safety Program

Fire Extinguishers can be serviced at several area companies.  We have created a guide with information.

 Should you wish to dispose of a fire extinguisher, Olmsted County Hazardous Wate Facility will take them at no charge.
