While making a complaint might seem difficult, we aim to make the process as simple and transparent as possible.
The Rochester Police Department is committed to investigating all complaints in an impartial, fair and thorough manner. We will ensure that all complainants are treated with the respect and courtesy they deserve.
We will investigate all complaints in a timely manner, whether they are against an individual police officer, a civilian employee, or regarding a policy or procedure. Complainants will be updated at each stage of the process.
What Happens Next?
At times, an explanation of the law or standard operating procedures will help resolve misunderstandings.
Complaints which cannot be resolved immediately may require further investigation.
If an investigation is required, you will receive a letter confirming the name of the person who will investigate your complaint and what will happen next.
Depending on the nature of your complaint, it will be investigated by a supervisor or the Professional Standards Manager.
The investigator will produce a report of their findings. You will be advised in writing of the outcome by the Professional Standards Manager.
There are a number of possible outcomes, which range from a sustained complaint and formal disciplinary action imposed, to no further action being taken on the complaint.
We aim to be as transparent as possible throughout the complaint process and trust that this overview encourages you to approach the Rochester Police Department with any concerns you may have regarding employee conduct or our policies and procedures, in the knowledge that we take all complaints seriously, however minor.

Call our Professional Standards Manager, (507) 328 6988 during normal business hours or leave a voicemail message which we aim to return within 48 hours.
