Rochester Fire Department to Host “Women Explore Fire Day Minnesota”
April 7, 2026 – ROCHESTER, MINN. – The Rochester Fire Department (RFD) is partnering with fire departments across Southeast Minnesota - Region 15 for Women Explore Fire Day Minnesota, a coordinated statewide initiative designed to introduce women to careers and volunteer opportunities in the fire service. The event provides a supportive, hands-on environment where participants can experience the daily responsibilities of firefighters and first responders. Participants rotate through interactive stations led by female firefighters and department members, gaining realistic insight into training, teamwork and emergency response operations.

May 2, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Olmsted Public Training Center (1550 50th Street SE, Rochester)

Hands-on activities may include:
- Operating extrication tools
- Climbing aerial or ground ladders
- Participating in emergency medical scenarios
- Donning and doffing turnout gear
- Advancing a charged hose line
Currently, women make up approximately 9% of firefighters nationwide, underscoring a significant opportunity to expand the talent pool within the fire service. Women Explore Fire Day Minnesota aims to break down misconceptions and eliminate barriers that may prevent women from considering the fire service. While firefighting may not be the right fit for everyone, the event allows participants to explore the role firsthand and make informed decisions about serving their communities. By creating inclusive opportunities and increasing awareness, fire departments across the state are working to build a resilient workforce that reflects and supports the communities they serve.
