Take Part in ‘Slow Mow Summer’ to Promote Sustainable Lawn Care

This summer, the City of Rochester Parks & Recreation Department encourages residents to take part in Slow Mow Summer, an initiative promoting a more sustainable approach to lawn care that supports pollinators and healthier lawns.

Slow Mow Summer encourages residents to mow less frequently throughout the growing season. This approach helps conserve water, reduce fertilizer use and create stronger, more resilient turf. It also supports pollinators beyond early spring, which is critical as many bee species do not emerge from hibernation until June or July, when plants like self-heal, ground plum, lanceleaf tickweed and calico American aster begin to bloom.

Even small changes in mowing habits can make a meaningful difference in providing food and habitat for bees and other pollinators throughout the summer.

May will serve as a transition month, giving residents time to adjust their lawn care routines. While no strict enforcement will take place during this period, residents are encouraged to follow City guidelines to maintain healthy and manageable lawns.

To remain in compliance, turf grass must be kept under 12 inches and noxious weeds must be controlled, helping balance sustainability with neighborhood upkeep.

Residents can show their support for Slow Mow Summer by picking up a free yard sign at the Parks & Recreation Office inside Rochester City Hall during normal business hours. Limit one sign per household.

Several Rochester parks are also participating in Slow Mow Summer, including Diamond Ridge, Elton Hills Run, Morris Hills, Parkwood Hills, Elmcroft, Fieldstone, Joyce, and Stonebrooke, demonstrating how these practices can be implemented across the community.
