25 Years After 9/11: Documentary Screening and Community Engagement Discussion
The City of Rochester Mayor’s Office will host a screening of 9/11: Reclaiming Ground Zero – Why Community Engagement Matters on Thursday, Sept. 10. A facilitated community discussion will follow the screening for those interested.
The documentary tells the story of “Listening to the City,” a large-scale public engagement effort held in New York City in 2002 as decisions were being made about the future of the World Trade Center site. New Yorkers came together to review proposed plans, share their perspectives and help shape the redevelopment of Ground Zero.
The screening will give community members a chance to learn about one of the largest public town hall gatherings in U.S. history and consider how meaningful public engagement can take shape in Rochester.

The event is part of ongoing work by Mayor Kim Norton and the Rochester City Council to improve public meetings and make community engagement more meaningful and effective. The idea to bring the documentary to Rochester came through the City’s work with the National Civic League.
