City of Rochester Reminds Residents of Pet Rules in Parks and Public Spaces
As more residents and visitors enjoy Rochester parks, trails and public spaces during the warmer months, the City of Rochester is reminding pet owners to follow local leash and pet waste rules to help keep public spaces safe, clean and welcoming for everyone.
Under Rochester City ordinance, dogs must be leashed in designated on-leash areas, including public streets and sidewalks, maintained park trails and areas near playgrounds, picnic shelters, sports fields and paved park facilities when others are present. Leashes, chains or cables may not exceed 10 feet in length.
In designated off-leash areas and dog parks, dogs must remain under control, within sight of their owner and respond to commands.
Following leash requirements helps reduce unwanted interactions between dogs and other park users and supports a safer environment for children, families, cyclists, runners and other pets enjoying Rochester’s parks and trails.
Pet owners are also required to immediately clean up and properly dispose of pet waste in parks, trails, sidewalks and other public spaces. Cleaning up after pets helps protect water quality, reduce bacteria and keep shared spaces enjoyable for all.
Residents visiting parks and public areas with pets are expected to:
-
Follow posted leash requirements
-
Keep pets under control at all times
-
Carry waste bags and promptly clean up pet waste
-
Properly dispose of pet waste in designated trash receptacles
-
Be respectful of other park users and animals
