Construction Progress Continues at Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park

Construction at Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park has continued to move forward throughout the summer.

Work is progressing on the new restroom and mechanical building. The splash pad has been poured and underground plumbing is complete. Playground equipment has also been installed, with safety surfacing planned for September. Remaining sidewalks, basketball courts and trail work are expected to be completed in late August and early September.

Work planned for this fall includes community gardens, painting the existing shelter, resurfacing the parking lot, disc golf modifications, fiber and security camera installation, site furnishings and sidewalk improvements along 2nd Street SE. The majority of the work is expected to be completed by Friday, November 13, with minor finishing work planned for spring.

“It’s exciting to see these improvements taking shape and to get closer to welcoming the community back to MLK Park,” said Parks and Recreation Director Paul Widman. “The project reflects the input we received from the community and the priorities they identified. These improvements will provide more opportunities for people of all ages to gather, play and enjoy this important community space.”

The improvements will help the park better serve the recreational needs of the community while remaining a vibrant and accessible space for all.
