The City of Rochester Celebrates Building Safety Month

May 6, 2026, ROCHESTER, MINN. – The City of Rochester celebrates its building safety professionals during Building Safety Month. These teammates focus on issuing building permits and conducting inspections to ensure compliance with city, state and national building codes to enhance safety, energy efficiency and accessibility.

City Administrator Alison Zelms shares, “Building safety is often invisible when it’s done well, but it is foundational to everything we value as a community. It’s what allows families to feel secure in their homes, businesses to operate with confidence and neighborhoods to grow with intention. During Building Safety Week, we recognize that safety isn’t just about codes and compliance, it’s about protecting quality of life. It reflects our commitment to getting the details right, to thinking long-term and to ensuring that as we build and evolve, we do so in a way that keeps people at the center.”

The City Hall dome lights will be lit green on Wednesday, May 13 in honor of Building Safety Month.

This year’s campaign, “Built to Last,” reinforces the need to adopt modern, regularly updated building codes and helps individuals, families, and businesses understand what it takes to create safe, sustainable structures.
