Week Without Driving: October 1-8, 2026
About one in three people in the United States does not drive. Some are too young to drive, while others may be unable to drive because of age, disability or cost. For thousands of people in Rochester, getting to work, school, appointments, shopping and other everyday destinations means relying on options other than driving themselves.
Week Without Driving invites people who regularly drive to experience what it is like to get around without getting behind the wheel.
The City of Rochester is participating again this year in partnership with Destination Medical Center (DMC), Rochester Public Schools (RPS) and community partners.
Take the Pledge
Between October 1 and 8, replace at least three trips you would normally drive with another way of getting around.
Walk, roll, bike, scoot, take the bus, use a rideshare or ask someone for a ride. As you go, pay attention to the time, cost, convenience and coordination involved. Then share a short reflection about your experience.
There is no failing version of Week Without Driving. If you plan a trip and discover that you cannot make it work without driving, that is valuable information, too. Understanding where transportation options work (and where they do not) is part of the experience.
Already get around without driving? We want to hear from you, too. You are invited to participate and share your everyday experience navigating Rochester.
