Pill Hill
In 2023, property owners and residents of the area known as “Pill Hill” approached the Heritage Preservation Commission (HPC) about designating it as a local historic district. The neighborhood was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990, but this only protects property from demolition or change when federal ownership, funding, or permits are involved.
The HPC agreed to consider, and the City is now working with these individuals to possibly establish a local historic district. This process includes neighborhood engagement with City officials, professional historical research and documentation, and public hearings at HPC and City Council.
At the January 28, 2025, meeting of the Heritage Preservation Commission, a public hearing was held, and the HPC approved a motion to recommend to the City Council the designation of the proposed Pill Hill historic landmark district. Ultimately, City Council approval is required to establish a local landmark district.
