Accessibility at Our Events

We believe music is a public good. Rochester Public Music is committed to making our events as welcoming and accessible as possible for all guests.

We know that needs vary, and we’re here to support you. Below, you’ll find information about physical access, communication tools, sensory considerations, and cost.

If your question isn’t answered here, contact us directly or speak with staff at the Public Music tent during the event.

Our programs take place in public parks and outdoor spaces. While we don’t offer structured seating or designated drop-off zones, we work to make our events as welcoming and navigable as possible.

At most large venues, guests can expect:

  • Accessible pathways from nearby public parking areas (availability varies by location)
  • Handicapped-accessible or ADA-compliant restrooms, including a portable unit and indoor restrooms at Riverside
  • Ample open space for seating and movement
  • Staff on site to assist with directions or questions

Event areas are primarily on grass and may include uneven terrain. Hard-surface seating areas are not available. We encourage guests with mobility concerns to plan accordingly.

We’re working to improve access and appreciate your feedback as we plan future upgrades. If you have questions about a specific venue or want to talk through options in advance, please reach out to our team.

We offer live CART captioning at all public Riverside, FORWARD, and Sound School concerts. CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) is a speech-to-text service that provides real-time captions during performances.

To use CART, you’ll need a phone, tablet, or laptop with internet access. Captions are streamed live and can be accessed at streamtext.net or by scanning the QR code posted near the event stage.

If you need help connecting or navigating the system, our staff at the Public Music tent are happy to assist.

Our public summer concerts take place in outdoor spaces and include amplified sound, live music, and large crowds. We do not currently offer designated sensory-friendly zones or quiet areas, but we’ll do our best to help you find space that feels comfortable.

If you or someone in your group is sensitive to noise, movement, or stimulation, here’s what to expect and how to plan:

  • Arrive early, when the space is typically quieter and less crowded
  • Bring ear protection or noise-dampening headphones
  • Talk with staff at the Public Music tent if you’d like help finding a lower-sensory spot

These events are flexible and self-paced. Guests are welcome to move around, step away, take breaks, dance, or simply listen. You’re encouraged to make the experience your own.

Rochester Public Music is committed to ensuring that cost is never a barrier to experiencing live music.

  • Free Events: The majority of our programs, including the Riverside Music Series, FORWARD Park Concerts, Passport Sessions, and 4th Fest are free and open to the public. No tickets or registration are required.
